Dear Collector,

Quintessential Cutlery is the name my husband Gary gave to our business of buying and selling custom knives. The name was meant to signal to collectors that the knives on offer were chosen with care and expertise.

Since Gary’s death, my biggest challenge has been to maintain the standard of the inventory. Although I have successfully carried on the business alone for several years now, knife selection is where I really miss his “eye”.

The very first time I went to look for knives, I gave up my intention of narrowing the range of what I buy. It became clear to me why we always had such variety - from swords to fruit knives. The reason is as good as it is simple. It is hard to pass up a good blade. In result, as you can see my selection still includes many categories.

After our initial misgivings about online knife trading, I have learned to appreciate its usefulness. I still prefer personal interaction with my collectors, but there are always shows and the telephone. I hope that you will not only visit my site, but also attend some shows so we can meet. You are welcome to call me if you would like more information.

Because the selection one can take to a show is limited, I would like this site to function as an extension of my show table. The knives posted on this Web site represent only a portion of my stock; eventually I intend to post most of my knives.

Knives are presented in two categories: Fixed Blades and Folders. Smaller groups within each category represent various types and price ranges in my selection. The "Early Makers" page shows knives made in the 70s and 80s (do not skip it). The “Collections” page is a new addition. The knives in one-man collections usually have common characteristics. A person with the same taste in knives may like to see them as a group. Special pages will be created on occasion for a specific group of knives or maker that I would like to bring to your attention.

This site is an ongoing project. It will continue to evolve to suit your needs and mine. And who knows – this could be the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

Sincerely,
Grazyna Shaw
